We’ve Got the Power….

The Flaming Phoenixes were thrilled to use their developing knowledge of potential and kinetic energy while making cookies. Perhaps their favourite part was when they used the chemical energy in the cookies to make kinetic and thermal energy for their bodies. While making cookies, students identified many examples of both potential and kinetic energy.  They recognised that gravitational energy was involved when cracked eggs dropped into the batter, sound energy when the eggs were cracked and electrical energy when we used a blender to mix.  Enjoy the photos below of our energetic cooking:

Afterwards we were lucky enough to have an energy expert, Mr. Dickinson, peak our interest in renewable and non-renewable energy sources.  Students were particularly attentive when seeing a miniature solar-powered car as it raced across a table top.

In the afternoon students used the large cookie (which was not for Ms. S) to explore fractions.  Use Tony’s Fraction Pizza Shop to continue exploring fractions at home :) .

Session 4 of our Cultural Exchange Symposium

It was a busy and informative event this morning.  All location specialists enjoyed having a crowd of supporters.  Aditya and Jenny shared a persuasive presentation about Australia while Adrien, Bettina and Nixie did the same for Madagascar.

The Country Shaped Like a Boot

If this is all you know about Italy you have come to the right place. Jong Eun, Logan and Lizzy presented some important information about Italy.  They used the Power Point below to highlight points made in their explanation presentation:

“The rain in Spain falls mostly in the…..”

Today  we learned about Spain!  Julian, Ryoma and Walker explained effectively what to expect when visiting this country.  Below is a Power Point which they referred to while sharing their information explanation presentation.

Session 1 of our Cultural Exchange Symposium

Boy and Girl have arrived – they are still suffering from spaceship lag so aren’t as animated as we had hoped….but they thoroughly enjoyed our first presentation focusing on Kenya, by YeWon and Hiroto.  Enjoy the slideshow  below.  What did you learn about living in Kenya?

The Aliens are Landing!

Next week is an exciting week.  Boy and Girl from Box World are finally arriving on Earth for our Cultural Symposium.  Students are looking forward to sharing with the class, Boy, Girl as well as parents that can make it.  Please see the schedule below to find times your child is presenting.

Celebrate good times….

A thank you to all parents who brought delicious treats, helped organize students, played games and had a go at being “snitch”.  The celebration was all we hoped it would be.  If you want to relive the highlights check out the photos below to see the sorting hat, wand selection, feasting, Dementor Tag, and of course our first games of Quidditch!

Explain Yourself!

Students make house banners and floating candles!

After brainstorming party ideas, students decided that a Harry Potter themed party fits into previous exploration of Citizenship.

With our anticipated celebration coming up, we decided to use the time spent on decorations to further develop our skills at explanation writing.

To begin,  students chose a variety of activities and identified the process involved. The Flaming Phoenixes used the ipads to document the process so they could later use the images with their writing. First the Phoenixes verbally explained the process.  When finished, students then brainstormed titles and subtitles to help them organize their writing.  Students have begun writing introductions and are developing their explanation writing.

It has been an exciting time at school.  The Flaming Phoenixes have been contacted by two alien life forms named Boy and Girl from the planet Box World.  They sent us a lively video-gram explaining their impending trip to the planet Earth.  It is their first time to visit our planet and wanted help to plan their itinerary. What places could they visit?  What would it be like there?  The students are busy gathering data about a chosen area and developing presentations for Boy and Girl – our fingers are crossed that they will be at our symposium.  Students have shared some discoveries below:

Julian,Ryoma and Walker:  We are doing Spain. Ryoma says “In Spain in some pat it rain a lot but  in some it doesnot rain much.” Julian says “Spain is sourronded by warm ocean currents.”

Irina, Annabelle and Kish  -  The  Terrific 3. We learned that in Switzerland most of the people live in the northern part,  and only a little amount people live in the southern part.

Hiroto and Yewon –  The African Explorers. We learned that Kenya rains alot even though Africa where Kenya is the hottest place it rains alot.

Marin, Elena and Hyun Jun -  The Japan Explorers. We learned that some parts of Japan are old and traditional but others are very modern and are very different. Also we learned that Japan has and uses alot of electronic equiqment.

The Super Smart Ninjas Nixie, Adrien, Bettina.  We are doing Madagascar. My favorite part is when we do the presentation because we can share our work. Something we learned that it is a tropical wet place so it is really rainy.

Lizzy, Jong Eun and Logan: The Awesome Alien Attracters. Lizzy’s favorite part was doing the animations on the power point presentation, Logan’s favorite part was finding facts and also Jong Eun’s favorite part was facts.  There are 58 million people whole live there and it is surrounded by 4 seas and 3 countries.
